Do Psychedelics Offer a Faster Path to Emotional Healing? New Research Suggests Yes

Colorful neon mushrooms with pink, purple, and orange caps on a golden background, creating a vibrant and surreal atmosphere.

For years, people have turned to meditation, breathwork, therapy, ritual, and plant medicine to break cycles of depression and emotional stagnation. But the scientific world has been slow to catch up — until now.

A new wave of psychedelic research is challenging the traditional timeline of healing, and one compound in particular is standing out: DMT (N-dimethyltryptamine), the same visionary molecule found in ayahuasca ceremonies across South America. And according to a recent clinical trial, DMT may create profound psychological shifts far faster than conventional antidepressants.

A Breakthrough Study With Surprising Speed

The clinical trial, conducted by the UK-based biotech company Small Pharma, explored whether a short, controlled IV infusion of DMT could help people with major depressive disorder. The study included 34 participants, all of whom were experiencing moderate to severe depression despite prior treatments.

Each participant received:

One 21.5 mg dose of DMTA 20- to 30-minute hallucinogenic experienceSupportive psychotherapy before and after the session

To measure changes in symptoms, researchers used the Montgomery–Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), a widely accepted tool for tracking the severity of depression.

What happened next is what makes this study impossible to ignore.

The Results Were Fast — and Strong

Two weeks after their single DMT session, participants showed a statistically significant and clinically meaningful reduction in depression symptoms.

And at the three-month mark?

Fifty-seven percent of participants were in remission.

That number matters. Most antidepressants take six to eight weeks to begin working — if they work at all — and ongoing treatment is typically required. In this study, meaningful relief came after one guided psychedelic experience.

Compared to the placebo group, the DMT group showed a 7.4-point difference on the MADRS scale after just two weeks. In the clinical world, that’s not subtle. That’s a signal.

As Dr. David Erritzoe, Clinical Psychiatrist at Imperial College London and the study’s Chief Investigator, explained: “For patients who experience little benefit from existing antidepressants, the potential for rapid and durable relief from a single treatment is very promising.”

Why This Study Matters for the Future of Mental Wellness

Research on psilocybin (magic mushrooms) has already shown powerful results for depression, addiction, and end-of-life anxiety. What makes this DMT trial different is the speed. Most psychedelic trials involve several doses or a multi-session protocol. DMT is short-acting — sometimes called “the businessperson’s trip” — but still capable of creating deep shifts in perception, emotional release, and spiritual insight.

The implications are big:

Faster relief for people who don’t respond to antidepressants

Lower time commitment than mushroom or MDMA-assisted therapy

Potential for more accessible and affordable treatment models

Growing legitimacy in the eyes of regulators, clinicians, and the public.

We’re witnessing the beginning of what may become a major shift in how society approaches healing. Psychedelic-assisted therapies are moving from fringe practices into the scientific mainstream — and culture is paying attention.

Where We Go From Here

The results of this DMT study are expected to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, which will likely push the conversation forward. Regulatory pathways are opening, clinical interest is expanding, and patients are looking for alternatives that actually work.

At High Sol, we see this research as part of a wider movement: a collective return to tools that reconnect us with consciousness, inner clarity, and meaning — but grounded in science and responsible integration.

Psychedelics aren’t a magic wand, and they’re not a shortcut. But for some, they may be a catalyst — a door that opens the possibility of healing far faster than we once believed possible.
